How to create a token on Polygon

How to create a token on Polygon takes about a minute with a no-code tool, and the gas to do it costs a fraction of a cent. The one thing to get right first is the gas token: it is POL now, not MATIC.
The token you deploy is a standard ERC-20 smart contract that works with MetaMask, QuickSwap, and every Polygon wallet, verified on Polygonscan automatically. Here is the whole process.
POL, not MATIC, for gas
If you last used Polygon a while ago, you paid gas in MATIC. That token is gone. On September 4, 2024, MATIC was replaced by POL one-for-one as the native gas and staking token, and the migration is now about 99% complete.
If you held MATIC on Polygon itself, it converted to POL automatically, so there is nothing to do. MATIC sitting on Ethereum has to be swapped through Polygon's official migration contract. Either way, you only need a small amount of POL, because a deployment costs a fraction of a cent.
Create a token on Polygon: step by step
Open the Polygon token creator. From a blank form to a live token is about a minute.
Step 1: Connect and switch to Polygon
Connect MetaMask or another wallet and switch it to Polygon PoS, chain ID 137. Most wallets have it built in. Keep a little POL in the wallet for gas.

Step 2: Enter the token details
Set the name, symbol, total supply, and decimals, which are almost always 18. The name and symbol are baked into the contract at deploy, so check them before you move on.

Step 3: Standard or advanced
A plain token needs nothing here. Advanced options add a buy or sell tax, minting, burning, or a pausable switch, and move you to the higher fee tier.

Step 4: Review the fee
The tool fee is 50 POL for a standard token, or 150 POL with advanced features, shown before you sign. Network gas is separate, in POL, and tiny.

Step 5: Deploy, and it verifies itself
Sign in MetaMask. The contract deploys in seconds, and Tokenry verifies it on Polygonscan automatically, with no manual verification step. Holders can read the source the moment the token is live.

What deployment actually costs
Two numbers: the tool fee, and gas. The tool fee is 50 POL standard or 150 POL advanced. Gas is the rounding error, a fraction of a cent in POL.
That cost is why Polygon has become a payments and stablecoin blockchain as much as a DeFi one. It is now one of the busiest networks for stablecoin transfers, with a Visa stablecoin settlement pilot and creator payouts from large consumer apps running on it. For a token creator, the practical read is that fees stay negligible even when the network is busy, unlike the same ERC-20 on Ethereum, which can cost dollars in gas.
Make it tradeable on QuickSwap
A fresh token has no market until you seed one. Add it to your wallet first: in MetaMask on Polygon, choose Import tokens and paste the contract address.
Then create the market on QuickSwap, Polygon's largest native DEX. Use Pool, then Create a pair, paste your token's address, and pair it against POL or a stablecoin like USDC. You deposit both sides and become the first liquidity provider, and the ratio you deposit sets the opening price.
Locking or burning the liquidity afterward is a common trust signal. To seed early holders, use the Polygon multisender.
Polygon PoS, not zkEVM
One clarification that saves headaches: "Polygon" here means Polygon PoS, chain ID 137. It is not Polygon zkEVM, a separate chain whose mainnet beta was sunset in 2026. Deploy your token on PoS.
You may also see AggLayer mentioned. That is Polygon's cross-chain settlement layer, not a chain you deploy on. Your token still lives on Polygon PoS; AggLayer is about moving value between connected chains later.
Who controls the token
At deploy, the contract belongs to your wallet. Tokenry is non-custodial and never touches your keys.
For a community token, the trust question is whether you can still change the rules. Renounce ownership from the Polygon token manager and the settings become final. It cannot be reversed, so renounce only once the token is exactly how you want it.
Educational content, not financial advice. Tokenry is a self-serve, non-custodial tool, not a financial advisor. Crypto is volatile and risky - always do your own research before creating or investing in any token.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do you need MATIC or POL for gas on Polygon?
POL. MATIC was replaced by POL one-for-one on September 4, 2024, and POL is now Polygon's gas and staking token. MATIC held on Polygon converted automatically.
How much does it cost to create a token on Polygon?
The tool fee is 50 POL for a standard token or 150 POL for advanced features, plus a fraction of a cent in POL for gas. You sign from your own wallet.
Is a Polygon token an ERC-20?
Yes. Polygon PoS is EVM-compatible, so tokens follow the ERC-20 standard and work with MetaMask and every Polygon DEX.
Should I deploy on Polygon PoS or Polygon zkEVM?
Polygon PoS, chain ID 137. Polygon zkEVM was a separate chain that has been sunset, so new tokens belong on Polygon PoS.
How do I make my Polygon token tradeable?
Create a liquidity pool on QuickSwap, Polygon's largest native DEX, pairing your token with POL or a stablecoin. Once the pool is live, anyone can trade it.
Is my contract verified on Polygonscan?
Yes, automatically. Tokenry verifies the contract on Polygonscan at deploy, so holders can read the source with no manual step.
Can I renounce ownership of the token?
Yes, from the Polygon token manager. Renouncing makes the settings final and cannot be undone, so do it once the token is set up the way you want.
